Fish Question/Walmart

Post by HSCmember on Mon Nov 23, 2009 9:34 pm

I see Walmart has Puffer fish for $4.95. The instructions on the tank say to put some marine salt in their water.

Are these a real marine fish or brachish water? I don't have the Puffer Fish issue of CORAL.

I was told someone always dies. Usually violently...

I'm not ready for that.

Marvin the Blenny was cleaning out his hidey holes today, spitting the debris out. Phil must not have done the water change/cleaning to his satisfaction.

I think that the next time we sit down and chat about the aquarium, we need to talk about inhabitants. More specifacally than we have in teh past. When we, as reefers, talk aquariums, all kinds of coral are held with equal consideration as fish and inverts. However, we've never actually sat down and talked about where the center wants to go. Are you looking to go to an aggresive tank, or more of a community? This is a very serious question when it comes to what fish to procure, and there is almost NO cross between. Community fish will often (unless they are as large as or larger than the others) end up as an expensive meal in an agresive aquarium, and things like puffers, and triggers, will eat coral snails, hermits, shrimps. Large angels eat anything. And Lion fish are impresive eaters, even the babies can eat fish larger than themselves.

As to your question, no. Don't get him. They are cool little devils, with great personalities. Those guys are listed as brachish, and can live in fresh or salt water, or anywhere in between, but he would have to be in a seperate system for a number of months to properly acclimate to the saltwater. Basicaly, place it in fresh and slowly add salt until it matches what's in the main system.

Blennies are just OCD when it comes to there dwellings.

No, I was never planning on getting him, just wondering why a fish like that is at Walmart. Although I could replace our old Zebra fish with him if he ever passes on.

I totally agree we need a plan for the tank. I think we have been working with the idea that we add only easly to maintain fish & corals until we know we can do a good job of keeping everything alive.

I really don't want to have kids see some fish carrying around a 1/2 eaten Nemo either. That would be too tramatic for them and me. So we need kind, peaceful fish that won't fight or jump to their death.

What is OCD?

I don't think you would ever see a half eaten fish. Generally, they swallow them whole, no chewing.

We need a Midas Blenny. I love the way those guys swim, and many of them stay in the water column.

I don't think I've seen one that didn't have a great personality. Some seem to swim less than others, but they've all been fun fish to watch.

So I'm reading the CORAL magazine Blennie issue and they say:
Different genera are compatible, such as Ecsenius and Meiacanthus species. Ecsenius species are not as compatible among themselves.

The Midas & Bicolor are both Ecsenius. It is a big tank, but Marvin uses the whole thing. Would we be better getting something of the Meiacanthus specie?
