ATS installed IN the sump of my 29 bio-cube....

Post by Nannook on Fri Dec 25, 2009 11:58 am

I have wanted an Algae Turf Scrubber for weeks, but I was not sold on the 5 gal bucket, and drilling my tank with extra large pump etc etc etc, for something I was not sure was going to help me.

I saw a piece of bull nosing left over from construction and had an idea, why use PVC? So I cut a piece of bull nosing and got some plastic canvas from Michaels, comes in a 12" x 18" roll I cut off a 6x10" piece and double the top to make a loop of the stiff material. Scratched it up with 36 grit sand paper and wedged it in the top of chamber two of my sump. The water cascades down the curtain and by grinding algae into both sides of the curtain I had a VERY cheap ATS. But would it work? {music from final Jeopardy round) betting 5 dollars Alex.
After 2 weeks, I have marked algae reduction in my DT and a good carpet on my scrubber surface. I only have a light on one side of my curtain, so what I lack in two sided photo synthesis I make for in greater square inches, so while not optimal, it seems to be working.

Thank you all for inspiration and encouragement.
