Drill a 55 gal

Post by obsessed on Wed Dec 30, 2009 11:04 am

Is it possible to drill a AGA 55 gal tank? Also does anyone have any ideas on how to fabricate a top brace for 55 AGA?

this is my old tank that my neighbor might be interested in. I am still waiting for my hubby to build my stand for my 75! I don't just want to throw this one away. we are thinking a canopy. would that be enough support?

You can buy new tank braces online if you really want to go through the work of fixing it. Honestly though, just go buy a new tank. The brace with shipping will cost at least half the price of a new one...

Most 55s are tempered. Some aren't but they are hard to tell which ones. I know all the ones from Walmart ARE tempered...

I have never seen a 55 that wasn't tempered... You can tell if it is tempered by using the polarized sunglasses test.

I talked to someone at a lfs today and they can order a top brace for about $20. It's a good thing I didn't know that before I bought the 75 or I would be stuck with the 55. ha ha ha

What's this polarized sunglass test? I found this on Wikipedia - "The strain pattern resulting from tempering can be observed with polarized light or by using a pair of polarizing sun glasses." I'm assuming this is the wierd pattern of light I may see when looking out the rear window of my car while wearing polarized glasses. Interesting...hmm.

mine was not tempered I did drill it for a sump, (now saying that I can not prove it because while doing work on the house one of the helpers kids moved a metal barstool and cracked it)

Matt, you are correct. When viewing tempered glass through a polarized lens, you will see darker lines or spots. Same with acrylic, except it's really pretty colors, and they change when you apply stress to it. Cool stuff.

SO does anyone have any polorized glasses?? That would be a really neat thing to have tomorrow so people could see the differance and or maybe if anyone has a 55 or smaller tank that is temperd I could drill it so everyone can see what happens?? Just thoughts
