Need help... Trying to figure out whats growing...

Post by ntijan on Mon Jan 04, 2010 4:31 pm

We had our entire tank crash on us and lost everything.. Now that things are cleared up we have a massive growth of things that we have no idea what are if anybody could help that would be awesome. I just want to make sure that everything that is growing is going to be safe to let run its course. Also since the tank crash we have been seeing these new little worms in our tank, they are not bristle worms they are white/clear almost look like centipeds?? Anybody have any ideas..

well congratulations on having every species of pest algae in your tank, lol. jk, but for real you do. Feather algae, bubble algae, calupera, and some others. I would be curious to know more about the set up as well and what you mean by it crashed.

White little things? Are they in the shape of centiped meaning many legs?

I mean it crashed by Everything I had in my tank died.. My corals and my fish all in the same day about the same time.. What we are thinking happened was a bacterial problem, the local pet store helped us to get it back up and running to the point it is at now.

I know that it is a caulerpa algae the grape and feather type, have been doing some research today... My question that I am having a hard time finding an answer to is how to control it....

As far as the worms go there is actually on in the second to last picture of Grape Caulerpa, close to the center of the picture. The have many legs and can swim, they have the appappearance of a snake when they go to the top of the water.

1 what do you run in that Rena Filstar xP canister filter ?
2 as for the pest algae pull it out by hand when you do a W/C.

I don't know what the red stuff is but if you get rid of it I would take it. My trigger might just eat it all but if not it would look pretty cool growing I think.

Well the Red Algae-Rhodophyta could be "Plocamium".

And the little white worms do they look lke this?

and I have a few questions for you do you have a glass top on your Aquarium?

and are you using tap water? the reason I ask is the growth your having it looks like your getting fuel from metals in most tap waters or high TDS reading in your RO water or over feeding and if your using LR that should be all the Bio filtration you need and your Canister filter can easily become a nutrient factory and can produce fuel for unwanted macro algae too, if you can control the flow rate in your canister filter you could try using some GFO Ferric Oxide this will help control the phosphates in your water column,

What is your alk at?.

I did see in some of your photos what looks to be Dinoflagellates which raising your Alk or using kalkwasser in your top off if your using a top off on your tank will help control that if your not using a top off Kalkwasser should be dripped into the tank.

PS. I forgot to mention if your Alk is low and you do drip or use in Auto top off you'll need to meter or test regularly to figure your consumption rate.

your alk(KH) is almost 17 dkh is what most people use for kh measurement should be 7-14 dkh. Divide by 17.9 to get dkh from ppm. The grape calurpa I had took the rock out and dried it and gone, I had a tang that aet it too. What are you using to test kh with I hope not the dip strips they are not accurate.

Just an update on my tank as of lately... Everything has calmed down!!! My water is now crystal clear and everything is coming back to life at great speeds. I ended up changing my light schedule so that it was on about an hour less everyday which cut algea growth way back, got my protien skimmer working its behind off keeping the water clean, and now have a full cleaning crew working on cleaning up what is left in the tank. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that helped me out and gave me advice I really appreciate it! I will post some new pictures soon of how everything is looking.

I am thinking that it came in on some coral that we bought, it was the last piece I put into my tank before I started having so many problems. The piece looked very healthy when I got it from the store under their lights but when I got it home it had a grey tint to it. I was told from the store I got it from that it was sitting there for a long time but was not told that until I started to have problems. Everything is seeming to clear up now except for the bubble algea but I am slowing removing it from my tank.
