Whoo hoo finally!
Ok so the whole time since we had switched our 12 gallon to this nanocube we have been battling dinos or cyano or some nasty brown algea that would cover a thin layer on the rocks and sand and generally make the tank look like crap, plus green film algea on the glass.
Once a week during water changes I was cleaning it off, siphoning the sand, etc. Nice and clean again...for the day, by the next day brown was back in style and I was cleaning the glass several times a day. I cut feedings, cut lighting, upped flow, upped water changes, nothing.
So last week I was cleaning out my fish cupboards and found a little aquaclear filter, stuck it on the side of the tank, threw a bag of carbon in and some filter floss and did my water change. Next day, no brown. 5 days later (today) little film algea but nothing compared to what it was and the sand is slightly dirty looking but not covered in crap. I'm finally happy to look at that tank again.
I'm posting a pic as proof, it looks dark in the back, we moved the sunpod forward to make room for the filter, the day after moving it our clam turned a bit to get the most of the light so I think we will leave it pushed to the front, I moved the non photo stuff to the back corner and they are enjoying the shade. The only thing that's not happy is the acan colony in the lower right, I don't know if it's the light upgrade or what but they are very stressed, I think I will try dipping them and moving them to an overhang this weekend.

I got a squamosa that is glued to the front pane of glass, I can move it back and the next day back hugging the glass. I've given up. Tank looks good.

The alien eye? If you can ever convince James to let it be fragged! All of the chalices seem to be really enjoying the extra light but that one especially, it's not fully puffed out in this pic, the rim is normally pretty big. I had to move it which is too bad, where it was previously the flow was causing it to cup and it looked awesome.

Nice!
Well this is a whoo hoo moment! Yea for filtration. That cleared up mine too, but it happened gradually so I did not associate the two.

To be honest, I feel kind of dumb, I rarely run carbon, I've always run my nanos with rock only for filtration and without a hang on filter you can't run it, I usually throw some in once every few months but never noticed any difference before so wasn't expecting anything out of it. Now I'm like, why have I been working SO hard to fix this and not tried carbon before!! Oh well. I'm just happy the tank looks so nice for a change.
