Night lighting

Post by nano on Thu Feb 04, 2010 11:49 pm

Ive read that with a reef tank it s a good idea to have types of night lights. Has anybody ran these and are they worth it . Ive seen the led types to simulate the moon.

They are mostly for aesthetics, I turn mind on with full moon week. They are cool and many store bought lighting systems come with them built in. I have heard some fish will spawn with the moon. According to Julian Delbeek (wrote the books The Reef Aquarium vol. 1,2 and 3) they are not necessary, just fun. Don't underestimate fun.

Both of my light fixtures have blue moonlights built in, I love them and they double as a nightlight sometimes.

There are two different types of moonlights though. You have the moonlights that just come on at night for some simulated "night" light. This is mainly for aesthetics and allows you to see the fish and stuff at night. These could be any LED strip or most built in LED moonlighting systems...

The second type (which I still need to hook up) are ones that turn on based on the actual moon cycle. My AC3 has a moonlight system that will be part of the retro kit when I actualy finish building it. These are programed to turn on based on the actual moon cycles of the seasons.

I have heard that the actual moon cycle simulating ones can cause spawning more often than the other ones. I got mine with a kit but have been hesitant to hook them up due to that reason. A large enough spawn can crash a tank if the filtration canot keep up.
