Deep Sand Bed..

Post by HSCmember on Tue Jan 31, 2012 9:19 pm

I was wondering if anyone uses a deep sand bed as an extra source of filtration? Bucket of sand in the sump or something of that sort? If so, are you pleased? How deep? I would have to make it a tall narrow pail.

I'm wondering about trying it in the science center 210 sump. Right now the center baffle appears to be full of aquapods we dumped in there thanks to Duluth club sale. (I am still smarting over someone buying my plant). Could I fill the center baffle with 5"-6" of sand and use that?

the main problem with using a DSB in my experience is getting a good and proper clean up crew, most tend to add sand sifting gobies or starfish to there sand beds and they eat the key critters that balance out a DSB.
