flat worms

Post by blennieluvr on Sat May 23, 2009 10:17 pm

Is anyone online that can help me? I got a couple of frags today and they look OK but the ones HD got from the same place had flat worms. I'd like to treat just in case but don't have any of that exit stuff. I have a coral disinfectant but that doesn't sound like it'll help. Should I just fresh water dip before putting in the tank? I can wait till tomorrow maybe and see if the LFS's have that other stuff (can't remember the name).

I should note that the pieces look GREAT! Can't wait to get them in the tank and maybe they're just fine but I don't want to take chances just one week out from the swap. I don't even know what flatworms look like for sure but can't see anything on the frags.

i just saw an article that said fresh water dip and gently shake them in the water to dislodge the worms.

was the name Flatworm Exit? and I read about another technique where the person blew the corals with a turkey baster and it would cause the flatworms to fly off the coral in a cloud and one of their fish would munch them...forgot where I read that one though....

If you already put them in your tank they would have probably spread already but if not a freshwater dip will kill them. As far as tank treatment flatworm exit works great, I have some that's still good if you need it. You can suck them out with a baster or some airline tubing and they hate high flow. If you dip them before they go in the tank give them a good baster blowing (that sounds wrong, lol) to make sure you get all the hiding ones out. They aren't horrible to deal with, just ugly and usually takes a couple treatments to get rid of all of them. I got them from World of Fish in Duluth a few years back and they only really got bad in one tank, the others I had to really search to find them.

My stuff is probably OK then cause I can't see anything on them but I'll fresh water dip and turkey bast them first to be sure. Thanks!

Update. This didn't go so well. I hope at least one of them recovers.

The monti is bleached this a.m. and the chalice looks pretty sad too. It has a little color in it though so maybe it'll recover. I feel bad too cuz they seemed like nice pieces. What a waste. I really didn't see anything on them so I probably lost them being overly cautious.

I just think they were probably too stressed from the transport to be dipped and thrown in my tank. Hopefully, the one will still make it.
