RC help??????

Hey there peoples do any of you know much about RC stuff? My dad gave my son a RC John Deere tractor and he did not have a right charger for it and I happen to have one but when I charge up the battey there is nothing? Could the remote be bad? I put brand new batteries in it and that dont work either. Is there anyway to check them to see if they even work? The thing is big it is 2 feet long and about 1' high and a 1' wide It is a 200.00 RC so I want to at least try and get it going.

most likely the speed controller for the unit is dead. How easy is it to try and just test the motor with battery?
